Will this save all the many email accounts, sub-folders, filters, addresses, etc? Should I install the bit version afterwards or stick with the bit version? This how I transfer my Thunderbird accounts to a new computer.
Just remember to transfer the contents of the folder, since a new installation will give another name to the profile. You may also take a backup image of the system disk, if you like. And, yes, you are right to be nervous, because nothing is guaranteed.
I hope that by copying the profile you won't be propagating the problem. TB itself does not tell me there is a new version, but when I installed v Will update the answer with this information. TB gives all that information when a new version is installed. It's a good idea to read it before hitting OK.

Next, enable the Menu bar if you have not already. To do so: click the Menu button near the top right of the Thunderbird window, then click Options, then place a check mark beside "Menu Bar". You should now see the menu bar at the top. Now it's time to download a dictionary. Under the "Spelling tab" you should see: "Enable spell check as you type" and it should have a check mark beside it.
If your "Language" pull-down option is grayed out, then will need to download and enable a dictionary. Click the "Download more Dictionaries" link. This will open up a new tab in Thunderbird; in order to access that tab you will have to close the "Options" window. Do that and you should be able to access the "Dictionaries" download page. Click the link to download the "English US " dictionary or whichever dictionary you prefer. A new window will appear, click the "Add to thunderbird" option, then "Install now".
At this point, Thunderbird will report the dictionary was installed at the very top of the screen. Near the very right of that is an option to click that says: "Add-on manager" - click that button. The "Add-ons manager" tab will appear and you should see a "Dictionaries" heading on the left side of the window, with the dictionary you installed on the right. Now it's time to verify that the dictionary is selected for use.
It should say: "Enable spell check as you type" with a check mark, then underneath that: "Language: English US ", or whichever language you specified. Now it's time to test your spell check. Close all the Thunderbird tabs except for the main Thunderbird window. Check out our Mobile Add-ons site. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 88 users. LanguageTool detects many errors that a simple spell checker cannot, such as grammar issues, commonly confused words, and punctuation oversights. Additionally, LanguageTool offers style suggestions to elevate your writing: synonym replacements for overused words, concise rephrasing of wordy sentences, and formal alternatives to commonly used expressions. With LanguageTool, our aim is to give users a full-feature grammar checker and proofreader that will enable them to have control and confidence over their content.
While LanguageTool is a vital extension for non-native speakers, it also recognizes many mistakes that are frequently made by native speakers. This grammar and spelling correction works across several varieties of commonly spoken languages, and is capable of distinguishing between American and British English. LanguageTool also features a personal dictionary for exceptions or words that you might commonly use, but are not found in a conventional dictionary; it will learn to recognize these words for future grammar checking and proofreading.
Unlike other services like Grammarly a. LanguageTool is a mediocre grammar checker. I can't say I recommend the paid license, but the free plan is a welcome step up from vanilla spell checkers. This add-on is excellent, however. Very responsive, and well designed. Only limited by the capabilities of LanguageTool itself.
Note, that you should be comfortable trusting a third-party with your privacy before using this tool. You can self-host the LanguageTool service, but by default it will send all of your composed email contents through the LanguageTool public API. Thanks Language tool.
